Puyallup Main Street Association partners with Valley Arts United to bring Arts in the Park 2012 “Salmon Spirit Speaks” to Pioneer Park on August 25th from 10am – 3pm. This is a free, public event associated with the Farmer’s Market, and open for all ages. Don’t miss a historic performance of Puyallup Family Native Dancers on Rotary Stage from 10:30-11:30am – a multigenerational family dance group brings traditional Puyallup native dance forms to downtown Puyallup for the first time in decades! The Oregon scuptor behind “Salmon Spirit Speaks”, Mark Andrew, will be on hand to discuss the inspiration for his acclaimed sculpture (now located near City Hall) and also show new works.
Tacoma Art Museum returns for a second year with hands-on activities. Projects include articulated fish puppets, tie-dye butterflies, and traditional Northwest beads. TAM will also bring a sidewalk chalk-art project, which combines native words of welcome with outlines of salmon to be filled in to create a salmon run along the “Puyallup River” sidewalk adjacent to City Hall. Gallery 3 brings “Random Acts of Art” again, this time focusing on coloring paper salmon to decorate the park. To round out the day, four additional Arts Downtown program artists will exhibit new works and demonstrate their techniques.
