Meeker Days Festival Strikes Gold

The Puyallup Main Street Association was recently awarded top honors at the Northwest Festivals and Events Conference in Salem, OR. The conference is co-produced by the Washington Festivals & Events Association (WFEA) and the Oregon Festivals & Events Association and is attended by members from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Northern California. WFEA is a membership association of Washington festival and special event organizers dedicated to promoting and strengthening the special events industry through education, networking and cultivating the highest professional standards.

The Summit Awards is a competition among Washington’s festivals and event producers. The competition recognizes those in the industry who are continually improving the quality and image of festivals and special events in the eyes of the community and media. This year the Puyallup Main Street Association 2007 Meeker Days Festival was awarded with a Gold Award for Best Advertising/Promotional Poster (a hotly contested category), a Gold Award for Best Newspaper Insert, and a Bronze Award for Best T-Shirt Design.

"The number of entries and the diversity in the size and types of events and communities represented are indicators of the strength of community festivals and events throughout the state,” said WFEA President David Kageyama. “Festivals reflect the unique cultural characteristics of communities and invite residents and visitors alike to join together in celebration.”

“This was an amazing honor for our organization,” stated Shelli Williams, Meeker Days Festival Manager, “and we are very proud to have won these awards.”

Puyallup Main Street Receives 2008 National Main Street Program Accreditation

The Puyallup Main Street Association (PMSA) has been accredited as a 2008 National Main Street Program for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center®.  PMSA joins over 675 other Main Street™ revitalization programs being recognized as 2008 National Main Street Programs. Each year, the National Trust Main Street Center and its coordinating program partners announce the list of accredited National Main Street Programs around the country that have demonstrated their ability to follow the Main Street methodology.

“We congratulate this year’s accredited National Main Street Programs for meeting our established performance standards,” says Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. “Rebuilding a district’s economic health and maintaining that success requires broad-based community involvement and support, in addition to establishing a solid organization with sound management that is committed to long-term success.”

The National Trust Main Street Center works in partnership with Coordinating Main Street Programs throughout the nation to identify the local programs that meet the National Trust Main Street Center’s ten basic performance standards. These standards set the benchmarks for measuring an individual Main Street program’s application of the Main Street Four-Point Approach™ to commercial district revitalization. Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as developing a mission, fostering strong public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking economic progress, and preserving historic buildings. For more information on the National Main Street Program accreditation, visit www.mainstreet.org/nationalprograms.

The organization’s performance was evaluated by the Main Street Office of the Washington State Department of Community, Trade, and Economic Development, which is the coordinating organization for Main Street programs in all of Washington State.

“Downtown Puyallup has entered a transitional phase,” PMSA Executive Director Dave Eatwell comments. “This accreditation indicates that we have the team, plan and resources in place to take our Central Business District to the next level. It is an exciting time for PMSA staff, our Board of Directors, volunteers, and partners.”
